China blocks another search engine
Altavista appears to be the latest search engine blocked by the Chinese Internet police; Google was cut off earlier in the week.
According to the news service, China would not allow search engines to become "vacuum cleaners" which indiscriminately suck in information without a filter.If you're set on accessing Google and all its unhealthy material, New Scientist has found an obscure backwards Google mirror that China hasn't blocked yet. elgooG looks just like Google, but with all text displayed backwards. Searches must also be entered backwards, but the site does pull directly from Google's regular database.It added that Internet users and Internet service providers (ISPs) had demanded measures to eliminate pornography and "unhealthy material" -- a phrase that usually refers to political views not shared by the Communist Party.
